The Bulls held its first scrimmage Saturday and offensive coordinator Mike Canales gave USFN his thoughts on how the offense performed during the first scrimmage.
"You're never as happy as you think and you're never as disappointed as you think until you really watch the film. We've only have watched a clip or too of it, but in terms of going back and looking at what we've done, and where we've been from the beginning of camp to now, I'm excited about our future."
This is Coach Canales's first season holding the reins as offensive coordinator and likes the progress they've made so far.
"When you look at what Matt did and what B.J. did and Evan did collectively is very positive. We moved the ball up and down the field, and I think they ended up with 4 field goals and maybe 4 or 5 touchdowns. We got the ball, drove and did some good things."
The Bulls had some offensive woes last season, and Canales said there are several things he's focused on.
"The main things we're looking at is how we can clean up our mistakes, the penalties, alignments, the missed assignments, and those are all correctable, and if you can correct those things then your fine. We were able to do some things that we wanted to in the scrimmage this morning and afterwards I went back through my check list and we did ever one of them, and we did some of it darn well! And that bodes very well for our future."
Beside the regular offensive standouts, coach said several players that stood out.
"One kid that really stood out to me was Sterling Griffin. He did some really good things as a freshman, and some of the things he did I was very pleased with."
"I was very excited with how Mo Moise Plancher ran the ball."
"The way Andreas Shields played today showed a bright future for a redshirt freshman."
The offensive line is young, but athletic and talented and is giving time for the quarterbacks and opening holes for the backs.
"I think they're doing very good out there. They're finding ways to give us time and to extend plays, and they're doing that. I'm not going to go in depth with what we're doing, but we're giving out quarterbacks a chance, and that's a positive thing. Now we just continue to work on those things. We got to keep working on getting continuity with the five to seven guys that we can count on to play and that's what is important."
With the Bulls first scrimmage in the books Coach Canales likes what he sees.
"There were a lot of positive things, and we're definitely going in the right direction, and we're very excited about that."
The Bulls have Sunday off, but the coaches have film to watch, and the team will return to the practice field on Monday.
"Like I said, it's never as bad as you think and it's never as good as you think it was, but it always lies somewhere in between, and the film will show that. We're just going to keep building, and I'm excited to get back on the field on Monday."
