Marcus Shaw from Desoto High School is a prospect the South Florida coaching staff has been targeting since the early spring. He got their attention by having an outstanding junior year. Shaw rushed for over 2,000 yards and scored 35 touchdowns (34 rushing). He's reciprocated the Bulls interest and has them out in front early.
"USF is my number one right now."
Heading into the fall Marcus has collected about a half dozen offers. Besides USF he also has Tulane, Syracuse, Iowa State, Louisville, UCF and FIU. The 5-foot-10, 180 pound back says that he'd prefer to play his college ball close to home.
"I'm trying to stay in state. I mean, if Georgia offered that's not too far away, I'd go there."
As of now Shaw doesn't have any official visits set, but he has thought of a few schools he's going to hit in the fall.
"I want to go to Clemson. I definitely want to visit there. I'm also going to go to USF, and UCF if they offer me a visit. I'll probably plan a few others too."
USF is recruiting Shaw strictly as a running back. He considers himself an all-around type back and would like to talk to the Bulls staff about getting an opportunity to return kicks. His main recruiter is Coach Tresey.
"Coach Tresey is cool, I like him. I also like Coach Franks too."
Shaw says that the offense he runs in high school is nothing like the offenses that many of the teams that are recruiting him run, but that doesn't bother Marcus because he believes he can excel in a number of different schemes because he can do it all.
"I can run, but not a lot of people know I can catch because our team runs a Wing-T. We don't throw the ball at all. USF runs a spread, I can fit into that kind of offense even though our team doesn't throw the ball. I tell my coach all the time to put me at wide receiver, he just thinks I'm trying to be funny. I can do it."
Shaw is in no hurry to commit. He says he's going to take his time and let college teams evaluate him on what he does his senior season.
"I'm not committing till after the season. I'm going to wait and see what offers I can get. I'd like to see if Georgia, Florida or Clemson offers."
Growing up Shaw was a Texas Longhorn fan, specifically a Cedric Benson fan. Lately though he's dropped his allegiance to the Longhorns and watches football differently since being recruited by colleges from around the country.
"I liked the way Benson and Vince Young played. Colt McCoy is special too."
USFNation will catchup with Shaw later in the season or once an official visit is set. Check back for more updates on Marcus and the rest of the 2010 class.
