The Bulls began regular season practice today with lots of notes from the session, including that four freshmen were being held out while they await NCAA clearance and news that redshirt freshman Daniel Bryant would not play this season due to an NCAA academic issue.

USF Head Coach Jim Leavitt said that redshirt receiver Daniel Bryant will not be playing during the 2009 season due to NCAA academic issues, but will still be with the team and be able to practice. Leavitt said that Bryant "as all the hours, he's got the grades but there's so many hours you need to get, and we'd thought the NCAA would clear him, but he didn't get the waiver approved.

Leavitt also said that Bryant isn't ready yet, but it's frustrating. He also said that Bryant has 24 credit hours and has a 2.0 GPA, but wouldn't say his exact GPA or the exact NCAA issues that applied.

Freshman Bradley Battles was at practice but not in pads again, as he is still waiting to get an issue cleared by the NCAA.

There were several other freshmen not dressed at today's practice, defensive linemen Ryne Giddins & Julius Forte, and tight end Isaac Virgin were held out due to "clearinghouse but Leavitt wouldn't elaborate, saying "I don't know if I really can and even if I could, I probably wouldn't. But we feel….very positive about all of this. I think they will be cleared, I hope we can get them cleared."

Leavitt talked for over 18 minutes so stay tuned for more details.
