What is a Hilltopper, the name was chosen because the campus of the school is situated atop a hill that rises 232 feet (71 m) above the Barren River that flows through WKU's home city of Bowling Green.

WKU-USF Defensive Connection - WKU redshirt freshman linebacker Tyran Golden and USF sophomore defensive end Patrick Hampton both played at Martin Luther King High School in Lithonia, Ga.

Last game played: The Bulls are coming off a 40-7 home opening win over Wofford, and the Hilltoppers are coming off a 63-7 road loss to Tennessee, where they gave up 657 total yards to the Vols, and only registered 83 yards of offense.

Things to watch for

Record breaker - USF Senior quarterback Matt Grothe is just 89 yards away from breaking the BIG EAST record for total offense. He has 10,441 yards and His is chasing West Virginia's Pat White's 10,529 who set it in his final game last season. Grothe broke the USF school record (set by Marquel Blackwell) in the season-opener.

Streak breaker - The Hilltoppers' have won their first game at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium 19 of the past 20 seasons.  That includes a current streak of 13 straight wins in home openers.  The last team to spoil the opener for WKU was Murray State, when the Racers picked up a 35-14 win back on Aug. 31, 1995.

Big Red, the name given to Western Kentucky University's mascot, a big, fat, red, furry, amorphous blob created by WKU student Ralph Carey in 1979, and probably the most recognizable thing about WKU sports. He has appeared in multiple mascot competitions, winning the "Key to the Spirit" award at the Universal Cheerleading Association competition in 1980, 1981 & 1983. In 1996 reached the Final Four of ESPN's "Battle of the Mascots, and was named to the Capital One All-America Mascot Teams from 2002-2004. Was also in many ESPN commercials and featured in the 25,000th episode of Sports Center.
