Coach Leavitt "We got dominated"

The Bulls suffered their third Big East loss, 31-0 to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Here are USF head coach Jim Leavitt's post game comments from the Bulls loss. Also included are post game quotes from Bulls QB B.J. Daniels, FS Nate Allen & LB Kion Wilson.

Head Coach Jim Leavitt

Opening Statement...
"I don't know if I should just go to questions. We got dominated. Our offense got dominated by their defense. I thought our defense played and did some things. For it to only be 13-0 at halftime, I was shocked with as many mistakes as we made in the first half. For us, to be in the ballgame- I was shocked.

"Our defense played really, really well. In the second half, they got the really long run with (Joe) Martinek. If he doesn't have that run and we had a safety that missed the play and then they hit Tim (Brown) on the one that we were pressuring, the one touchdown. Those were two plays in the second half that if you take those away from our defense. Overall our defense did some good things.

"Our kicking game- you cant get a punt blocked. There is no excuse for that. And offensively, we didn't do a thing. They just completely dominated us and you all saw that, they just completely dominated us. B.J. (Daniel) struggled tonight. You saw that and he made some mistakes. For a freshman quarterback and of course, Rutgers has a freshman quarterback and he did fine. B.J. has done pretty good overall but tonight was not the night. He has played some pretty good games but tonight certainly wasn't.

"Offensively, we didn't do a good job with coaching and playing. You have to give Rutgers a lot of credit, they just beat the dog out of us. You have to give them credit, they did a nice job. We haven't fared very well against Rutgers over the year. They have done a very good job and especially the last two years, they have beaten us pretty good."

On why they came out flat...
"No, I don't know. I really don't know. We started off on defense and get the personal foul with (Jerome) Murphy and I think that would have been third and long. So I yanked him and put Kayvon Webster in and he had been gone all week to a funeral and got back and obviously he wasn't ready to play because he made some mistakes in there.

"They got down in there and scored and got seven points early. After that, our defense played extraordinary. I mean for it not to be 30 to nothing at halftime, I mean really, honestly. We were like giving them everything. I thought our defense played with emotion and passion and played all the way through the game. When you say not ready to play, I don't know I would say that because defensively we were. Offensively, I don't want to short-change Rutgers and say we weren't ready to play. They handled us and they beat the dog out of us. I don't have the answer."

On the offense...
"We got a couple of pass plays and we did get some things going. But we threw a couple of interceptions and I said before the game that Rutgers has done very well with the turnovers. We had to protect the ball and we didn't protect the ball and we didn't win. I don't want to sit there and say it was all us. Do I think we could have played better, well, yeah I think and hope so."

Quarterback B.J. Daniels

On the defense keeping it pretty close in the first half...
"In the first half, our defense stepped up. They did a very good job but we put them in some bad predicaments and definitely they played strong and saved us in some situations. As far as the offense is concerned, they were just coming after us and we didn't execute."

On if it is a strange feeling having not been shut out in the regular season before...
"It is something we are definitely not use to, I am not used to either. We have a lot of weapons on our offense and we are explosive and they just really did a job at containing us and shutting us down."

On Rutgers' defense and blitz...
"I was able to get outside a couple of times and run. They were coming with so many that we couldn't really hold them."

On the wind factor...
"On my second interception, it definitely was. Throwing in the post, the ball tailed on me in the wind. That was probably the only throw I would consider ineffective."

On the timing of turnovers...
"It killed our drives. We never had the momentum going to move the ball down the field in the red zone. You can't have turnovers."

Safety Nate Allen

On the defensive effort...
"On defense, we still didn't do enough to get it done. We all just played hard and we were not executing well tonight."

On if the hype of the game went south...
"Yes, we prepared well all week, I think. We had good practices and we were ready. The energy was there in practice and we were psyched up for this game. We just didn't execute, offensively and defensively. We made a few plays that killed us."

On the late hit call...
"That was big because it would have been third down and we were looking to get off the field but still you have to play and get off the field after that. We have to now get back into film and get ready for Louisville and just keep playing hard and finish out strong."

Linebacker Kion Wilson

On the game...
"It's no specific thing that I can pinpoint, I feel as if we did a great job at coming out and playing with a lot of energy and playing fast early. In the first half, I think we played pretty staggering defense. Just the small things we have to go back and patch up. That's our biggest letdown so far this season. We will play good defense, good defense and then that one letdown- it will cost us. It doesn't feel as if we lost as bad. But when we go back and look at the big plays we gave up, that's when it takes a toll."

On if it was an achievement to still be in the game at halftime...
"The defense- we knew we did extremely well at halftime. We were surprised the score wasn't worse than it was. There were plenty of opportunities for them to put points on the board and we held solid and fortunately we came out with just giving up 13 points."

On why special teams was not clicking...
"I can't say because the amount of time we put it is just as much as we focus on the film and actually doing the walk-through. We can't have bad days. One guy can't have a bad day and that was the biggest letdown. Certain players had a missed assignment or a letdown and we can't allow that."

On if it seems like they are moving backwards again...
"Not at all. We can't regress. It's all about trying to establish ourselves and get to a bowl game. That's our next goal to play for. Just going out and continuing to play with the energy and enthusiasm that we have played with in our winning games. Hopefully that will continue"
