Bulls 3-0 After 65-58 Win Over Davidson

USF starts off 3-0 after a 65-58 victory over Davidson in the first round of the Charleston Classic. Junior guard Dominique Jones recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore forward Gus Gilchrist added 21 points with a 15-16 performance at the free throw line.

The USF Bulls are now 3-0 after a 65-58 victory over Davidson in the first round of the Charleston Classic in South Carolina Thursday night.

USF were led by sophomore forward Augustus Gilchrist who had 21 points, and 8 rebounds and guard Dominique Jones who netted his third career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

In route to his 21 points, Gilchrist went 15-16 at the free throw line. The 15 free throws tie Solomon Bozeman for the second-most in USF history. Gus also had 1 block and 2 steals to go with his 8 rebounds. Junior F/C Jarrid Famous had 11 rebounds and 4 points.

Starting guards Chris Howard had 9 points, 2 assists, and 4 rebounds, and Mike Mercer chipped in 6 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Howard's two assists moved him into seventh place on USF's all-time assists list.

The Bulls shot only 36 percent in the first half, with Gilchrest scoring just two points and the Bulls holding a 28-25 lead at the end of the first period.

In the second the Bulls shot much better, hitting 47% from the field and 18-of-23 free throws, and led by 12 points with just seven minutes to go in the half. Davidson cut the lead to two with just 57.8 seconds to play, but Gilchrist made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 37 seconds to secure the win. Gilchrist and Jones combined for 29 of USF's 37 second-half points.

Reserve guard Justin Leemow hit two 3-pointers after hitting three against Virginia on Monday, and F Toarlyn Fitzpatrick pulled in 3 rebounds and had 2 points, his first points as a Bull.

USF will face South Carolina at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Charleston Classic.
