USF Coaching Search: Announcement Coming?

The search for USF's new Head Coach could be over as sources say a deal has been reached.

There have been many names thrown around linking themselves to the search for the vacant Head coaching job, but it appears the search may be over with an announcement expected that Skip Holtz will be named the next USF Head Coach.

Yesterday we said that we were hearing that after much consideration the search might have been narrowed down to 4 targets, and then later we said that it was down to two with a leader.

Through all this we said that ECU's Skip Holtz was the leading candidate for the Head coaching job. The news of Holtz being a leader was no surprise after hearing that he was contacted Saturday and interviewed earlier in the week while at the coaching convention, rumors have been flying that he was the top candidate.

We said yesterday that he is the top candidate and USF officials are trying to close on Holtz quickly, and are trying to dot the I's and cross the T's, and get this done very soon due to the timing of what happened last night with Kiffin bolting from Tennessee for USC. Not to mention what's at stake with the 2010 recruiting class.

Holtz is the current ECU head coach, and son of former Notre Dame and South Carolina coach Lou Holtz. Skip was also former Notre Dame offensive coordinator and UConn head coach. Holtz is 38-26 in five seasons at East Carolina, and stock rose after leading the led the Pirates (9-4) to their second straight Conference USA title and consecutive berths in the Liberty Bowl.

In five years as Head coach, Holtz turned around the ECU program, and led the Pirates to four consecutive winning seasons and two straight Conference USA championships. He's also been linked with coaching vacancies at Syracuse, Kansas and Cincinnati.

Holtz had called a 1 p.m. meeting with his ECU staff and will address his team at 3 p.m

An official announcement is expected soon
