Skip Holtz to be New USF Head Football Coach

The search for USF's new Head Coach is over as East Carolina Coach Skip Holtz announced in a team meeting that he is taking the head coaching job with USF.

After weeks of speculation and days of drama, it's all over; the Bulls have new Head coach. East Carolina Coach Skip Holtz announced in a team meeting that he is taking the head coaching job with USF. Welcome to the Skip Holtz era Bulls fans.

Skip Holtz, is the now former ECU head coach, and son of former Notre Dame and South Carolina coach Lou Holtz. Skip was also former Notre Dame offensive coordinator and UConn head coach. Holtz is 38-26 in five seasons at East Carolina, and stock rose after leading the led the Pirates (9-4) to their second straight Conference USA title and consecutive berths in the Liberty Bowl.

The news of Holtz hiring has been expected. There was some drama, but this should not be a shock. All week long we said that ECU's Skip Holtz was the leading candidate for the Head coaching job. The news of Holtz being a leader came after hearing that he was contacted Saturday and interviewed earlier in the week while at the coaching convention, rafter previously being contacted with school officials to gauge his interest, and rumors were been flying that he was the top candidate. Yesterday we said that we were hearing that after much consideration the search was narrowed down a few top targets two with a Holtz being the leader.

We also said USF officials were trying to close on Holtz quickly, and are trying to dot the I's and cross the T's, and get this done very soon due to the timing of what happened last night with Kiffin bolting from Tennessee for USC. Not to mention what's at stake with the 2010 recruiting class.

Reports came earlier today that Holtz had agreed to a deal with USF to take over as head football coach, but ECU Athletic Director Terry Holland said it wasn't true after meeting with Holtz in the morning "He informed me that he and USF are still conversing about the open football coaching position. He indicated that he had not been offered the position nor had he told them that he would accept the position if offered," Holland said in A Message to the Pirate Nation. Holland also said a decision will be announced by tomorrow.

Holtz had called a 1 p.m. meeting with his ECU staff and addressed his team at 3 p.m., and it was there he informed them that he was taking the USF Head coaching job.

Holtz began his career coaching career as wide receivers coach at Notre Dame before becoming offensive coordinator. He then became head coach at Connecticut in 1993 while they were still I-AA. He then became the OC at South Carolina following his father when he took over as the Head Coach. He was named head coach at ECU in 2004.

In five years as Head coach, Holtz turned around the ECU program, and led the Pirates to four consecutive winning seasons and two straight Conference USA championships. He has also been linked with coaching vacancies at Syracuse, Kansas and Cincinnati.

An official press release from USF officials came shortly after introducing him as the new Head Coach.

USF Athletics will hold a press conference in the outdoor amphitheatre at the Marshall Center at Noon Eastern on Friday, Jan. 15. The amphitheatre is on the south side of the Marshall Center.

New head coach Skip Holtz, Director of Athletics Doug Woolard and President Judy Genshaft will speak at the public event.
