There are some great receivers in Florida this year, you've heard of players like Sammy Watkins (Ft. Meyers), Sebring's Devin Clark, Hillsborough's Charles Lovett, Javares McRoy (Lakeland) and you've certainly heard of Jefferson's Andre Davis. All those recruits are big time names within hours of the Tampa Bay Area, well there is one you may not have heard of, but you will soon!
Who's the he next big name that you should know? It's Ja'Juan Story, a 6'4-188 pound athlete that plays 30 miles away from USF at Nature Cost High School. Story is a big fast athlete that played QB, WR, and DB, but is expected to focus more on WR this season and he's about to blow up.
"Things are going great. I just been working out, weightlifting and training for track," said Ja'Juan Story. "I didn't run track last year, but this year I'll compete in the 100, 200, and the 4x100."
At 6'4, and 188 pounds, Story also has speed and can flat out fly, running a reported 4.3 40 yard dash, and has a perfect combination of size and speed, to go with great ball skills."
"With my height and speed it causes a lot of mismatches in different positions on the field. But what makes me a good football player is my determination," said Story. "I like what I do, and have been doing it my whole life. Football makes me happy and it's my passion."
Last season at receiver, Story had 13 receptions for 423 yards (32.5 yards per catch) and three touchdowns. In two starts at quarterback, he had 27 carries for 265 yards and two touchdowns, and on defense he had 22 tackles and one sack. Not bad for a junior. This offseason he's working hard to get better.
"I'm working on getting faster through track, and getting stronger," said Story. I want to get better in every area on the field. I have very high expectations for this season, it's my senior year. "
Ja'Juan was also selected to be a member of Scout.com's Team Tampa for a national football tournament.
"I'm excited for that," said Story. "I'm looking forward to that, I know the competition will only make me better as a player
On the recruiting front things are beginning to pick up for Story. He had offers from FIU and Marshall, but his name recognition took a big leap last week after receiving a verbal offer that led to an official scholarship from Florida State last Thursday.
"Getting that offer was a big step in my football career," said Story. "I've also been hearing from Ohio State, FSU, Georgia Tech, USF, Oregon, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Boston College, a whole bunch of schools.
There will be plenty more offers on the way once more coaches make their rounds through Tampa this spring, and expect Ja'Juan stock to soar after this spring's 7-on-7's and evaluations are done.
"Right now I like FSU, Ohio State, USF, GT, and Texas," said Story.
Nature Coast is just under an hour from Tampa and Ja'Juan attended a Bulls game versus CSU last season with several of his teammates.
"USF is a good school too, and have a good football team over there," said Story. "Everything was real nice."
The Bulls are making a strong push for the talented receiver, and Ja'Juan will make a trip to Tampa today with his uncle and Nature Coast assistant Coach Rob Kazmier to see the campus up close and meet the staff and players. Afterwards they plan on attend the USF men's basketball game against Cincinnati.
Since we spoke with Ja'Juan USF extended an offer as of this morning.
"Coach Phil McGeoghan told me this morning that an offer was coming, and it will be in writing when we make the trip over there," said coach Kazmier. "Ja'Juan spoke with coach McGeoghan last night and seemed real excited after the conversation. Ja'Juan is looking forward to checking things out down there."
