Team Tampa 7on7 Weekend Recap

The Badger Sports elite 7-on-7 was held on the campus of USF this weekend and Team Tampa had a good showing. The top prospects played well and several players jumped in the spotlight with their performance and should earn major offers after the tournament. The teams in this tourney consisted of selected players from across the state of Florida with the 11 teams mostly made up of players in the same region such as Miami, Orlando, Naples, Jacksonville, Treasure Coast, and Tampa.

The tournament showcases the elite recruits, but it is also a great opportunity for other players to emerge. Team Tampa was made up of some of top prospects surrounding Tampa Bay and had a good showing over the weekend. Several players jumped in the spotlight with their performance and should earn major offers after the tournament.

The tournament was broken into a two-day format with the round robin seeding the first day and the single elimination tournament was played on Sunday. Saturday's round robin action got the players accustomed to playing together and battling opponents for the first time. Team Tampa went 3-1 and just narrowly missed going 4-0.

The round robin was broken down into three groupings, with Team Tampa matched with Southwest Florida, Treasure Coast, and Hard Knocks. For Team Tampa WR Charles Lovett couldn't make the tourney, Nature coast WR Ja'Juan story missed the first day due to a track meet, and Jefferson's Andre Davis only played in the first game due to baseball.

In game 1 Team Tampa faced South West Florida, a team made up from players such as Clay Burton (Venice), Jeff Heurerman (Baron Collier), and (Aaron Lynch Island Coast). Charlotte's Alex Mut wasn't at the tourney due to a cut on his hand.

On the opening drive Team Tampa drove down the field with passes to Jefferson receivers Andre Davis and Chris More and opened the scoring with a Josh Grady TD pass to Andre Davis (missed extra pt). SWF responded with a big pass for a TD, but Alex Dixon intercepted the extra point attempt keep the game tied 6-6. After a turnover on downs Tampa stopped SWF thanks to a big pass break-up by Freedom's Keith Lewis. On the next series Josh Grady threw a TD pass to Armwood's A.J. King who also caught the point after for a 13-6 lead. SWF scored on the next series but missed the extra point for a 13-12 score. On the next series Jefferson's Quentin Williams hit Chris Moore for a long pass then Williams hit Andre Davis on a fade for the TD but missed the extra point for a 19-12 lead. SWF drove the field but Robinson's Ruben Gonzales intercepted the pass intended for Clay Burton to secure the 19-12 win.

Game 1

In game 2 Team Tampa faced Hard Knocks, a team made up from players from the Miami Dade Area. With Jefferson's Andre Davis only playing in the first game due to baseball, Robinson's Ruben Gonzales played receiver as well as DB.

Tampa got the scoring going first when Josh Grady hit Armwood's A.J. King for a score, but missed on the conversion for 6-0 lead. HK scored on a big pass play, but also missed the extra point for a 6-6 tie. Tampa drove but stalled and turned the ball over on downs, but on the next possession Alex Dixon intercepted the ball. After the teams traded possessions HK hit a long pass to get them in the red zone, and on a lob pass Alex Dixon made a great play to break up the pass but the ball came back to the WR who caught the TD as he fell. Dante Fowler made a nice place to snuff the option on the conversion for a 12-6 lead. Then Quentin Williams hit Robinson's Frankie Williams for a long pass and then again for a score. Chris Moore caught the extra point for a 13-12 lead. Team Tampa's defense stiffened up after that, with Keith Lewis and John Taylor making some nice defensive plays. Williams hit JJ Hubbard and then Chris More made a nice leaping catch in the end zone for a score and a 19-12 lead. Tampa drove the ball with JJ Hubbard, Chris Moore and Matt Jones making some nice catches but couldn't punch it in. HK had one last chance to tie but Donte Fowler, Keith Lewis and the defense kept them out of the end zone.

Game 2

In game 3 Tampa faced Treasure coast who had players like FSU commit Keelin Smith and teammate Lamarcus Brutus.

Both teams didn't score on their opening possessions, but Tampa scored first when Quentin Williams hit Frankie Williams on a long post pattern and Chris Moore caught the extra point for a 7-0 lead. TC turned the ball over on downs after Keith Lewis made a nice pass break-up. On the next play Williams hit JJ Hubbard on an out that he turned into a long score. A.J. King caught the point after for a 14-0 lead. TC then drove the field scored but missed the extra point 14-6. Tampa drove the field but the ball was tipped in the end zone for an interception. On the next possession TC went down the field scored and got the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14. On the next series Tampa caught TC napping and Grady hit JJ Hubbard who took the short pass down the middle for a score. Frankie Williams caught the point after for a 21-14 lead. TC then hit a few big plays scored but missed the point after for a 21-20 score. Quinton Williams than hit Matt Jones for a score but missed the extra point for a 27-20 lead. TC then made a few nice passes scored the TD, and got the 2-point conversion for a 28-27 lead. Tampa had one last shot, but on third and short went long and turned the ball over on downs.

Game 3

In game 4 Team Tampa face off against HK for the second time. By the fourth game the weather dropped, and the wait in-between games had its effect on team Tampa who went scoreless on its first two possessions and HK took an early 6-0 lead. Then a Grady pass went off of A.J. Kings fingers for a pick that led to another HK score and Tampa was down 0-12. Then Tampa found its groove and Ruben Gonzales had an interception to get the ball back. Then Josh Grady hit Chris Moore for a long gain and then Matt Jones scored to cut the lead to 6-12. Tampa made another defensive stand where Keith Lewis had two pass break-up. Quenton Williams hit Chris Moore for a long pass down to the 2-yard line, and then Ruben Gonzales made a out leaped the defender for TD and a 6-12 score, and Chris moore made another leaping catch for the extra point and a 13-12 lead. HK then scored again but missed the extra point and Tampa was down again 13-18. With time winding down Williams hit passes to A.J. King and Chris Moore to get down to the 2-yard line, and then hit King again for the score and a 19-18 lead. Gonzales

Game 4

Team Tampa went 3-1 on Saturday with their only loss to Treasure coast by one point, and earned a first round by for Sunday championship series.

Tampa's was matched up with Pro Impact, a team from Jacksonville that didn't have a lot of big names but were led by UF commit A.C. Leonard, who had a great weekend and ended up being named tournament MVP.

Tampa started off hot with Josh Grady leading the team down the field with passes to Andre Davis and Chris Moore, and capped it with a TD to Davis but missed the extra point for a 6-0 lead. Pro Impact responded with a big play for a TD, but also missed the extra point for a 6-6 tie. Tampa then drove the field, but had a penalty in the red zone resulting in a turnover on downs. Pro Impact then got within scoring range, but Alex Dixon made a great play and intercepted the ball. The score remained 6-6 with both teams moving the ball but unable to punch it. Alex Dixon, Keith Lewis, Ruben Gonzales and Donte Fowler all made big plays to hold PI's offense in check. Then with time winding down, Pro Impact's AC Leonard made a great catch after Keith Lewis tipped the ball, and then were aided by a penalty to get inside the 5-yard line.

They got to the 2 on the first down, but were stuffed on second and third. On 4th and goal from the one with 3 minutes to go and the score was tied at 6 Team Tampa came up with a huge stop. The defense ran off the field, and as the offense came out, but an extremely late defensive pass interference was called by the refs around 30 seconds after the play was done. The defense had to run back, barely having time to get set, and then Quenton Brown was shoved to the ground for a blatant penalty, the refs convened but said their view was obstructed and it was a non call. They failed on the extra point for a 12-6 lead, but the clock was running the entire time and the game was over.

Team Tampa had a good showing over the weekend. The top prospects played well and several players jumped in the spotlight with their performance and should earn major offers after the tournament.
