Ja'Juan Story has become a wanted man this spring, as the 6- foot-3, 192 pound receiver has become a national recruit with 28 offers from some of the top programs in the country, and on Tuesday cut his list from 28 down to 14 schools.
The 3-star prospect ranked the No. 43 wide receiver in the country by Scout.com, has offers from Georgia, Miami, Florida State, South Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers, Iowa State, LSU, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Auburn, North Carolina, Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State, Note Dame, Minnesota, UCF and Florida International, among others.
Here's the list of schools that made the coveted receiver's first cut:
"They all have a good shot," said Nature Coast Coach Rob Kazmir. "All 14 of these schools are still in the running."
Of the schools that didn't make the cut Michigan, Tennessee and Rutgers are probably the most surprising of the schools that were trimmed from his list. There are also still some schools that Ja'Juan would be very interested in hearing from with Oregon and Texas leading the pack.
The majority of the programs that made his cut are located in the southeast and all have a common denominator.
"If you look at all the teams in the list, they're all power houses in their conference," said Nature Coast Coach Rob Kazmier. "They all throw the ball a lot and are going to be a contender in their conference, and are great programs."
"Some of the programs have young coaches but most have stable environments," said Kazmier. "Miami just locked up Randy Shannon, Skip Holtz is new at South Florida, but isn't going anywhere, Bill Stewart is got that program moving along, Tressel at Ohio State isn't going anywhere, and Brian Kelly is now at Notre Dame after winning two championships."
Story indicated that a big factor that influenced his list of favorites was the coaches he met during the spring.
"One of the big things was when the coaches came around this spring and I got a chance to meet with them," said Story. "I got a real feeling for some of them, more so then the others."
One of the schools that made story's list is USF, and Coach Kazmier gives a little insight into why.
"He has a good relationship with Coach McGeoghan, he knows he could come in and be an impact player early. He follows Carlton Mitchell who's doing very well with Cleveland. He likes their QB B.J. Daniels, he likes him a lot, and knows he'd have a couple of years with him at QB."
Story has visited USF several times this spring, and got to become familiar with the program and the coaches, which is a big reason why the Bulls are still in the hunt.
"I like USF because they have great coaches, great players, and they have good academics," said Story. "It's a school I could see myself going to."
"I really like Coach Skip Holtz and Coach McGeoghan, Coach Phil is a straight forward man and very honest," said story. "We talk all the time and I feel very comfortable around him."
Ja'Juan has only taken unofficial visits to South Florida and Florida State and the only visit he has planned for now is to the University of Florida on June 21st.
"I've been to FSU and USF several times, and I'll be going to Florida on Monday," said Story. "I look forward to seeing more of them."
Story should have a busy summer and fall checking out the 14 schools that made the cut.
"He eventually hopes to make it to the majority of the listed schools whether it is an unofficial or one of his five official visits, said coach Kazmier.
