Murray in contact with SMU

Thibodaux CB Cartel Murray had a stellar outing last Thursday night in his team's wild triple OT victory over McDonogh #35. Yesterday, Murray spoke with SMU recruiter Jeff Reinebold. Does Murray have the inside track on an offer from the Mustangs?

"Coach Reinebold pretty much loves me," laughed Cartel Murray. "He told me to keep doing what I'm doing; to handle my business on the field and in the classroom and that he'll take care of business on his end - in terms of getting me a scholarship offer.

"I watched the SMU/Texas Tech game and I thought SMU was going to pull it out. They have a fast-paced offense and their defense is better than the score indicated. The final score didn't tell the full story of the game.

"I hope SMU has a good week of practice and plays a good game (vs. UAB). Nobody from SMU gave up in the game Sunday. They kept coming at Texas Tech and it was in Tech's house."

Murray drew rave reviews for his coverage skills last week vs. McDonogh #35.

"I was on Charles Henderson (Utah commit) almost the entire night, and I think he had three catches for 12 yards," Murray said. "Two of those were screens that went for maybe two yards apiece, and the other catch was on a short slant.

"Henderson's pretty good, but I was focused and in my zone. I listened to my coaches and my teammates on defense helped me out by calling out the correct coverages.

"McDonogh's QB, Theltus Cobbins (Kentucky commit), was good. He reads defenses pretty well and he's a quiet guy on the field with good character. He's a good leader."

Murray said that SMU is recruiting him as an athlete, not just a cornerback.
