Sams sparks team to victory

SMU commit Jermaine Sams provided the knockout punch tonight in his team's win over Central High School. spoke with Sams after his team, St. Paul's (Covington, La.), took a 19-15 win to move to 2-0 on the season.

"I had a 99-yard touchdown reception," said a fired-up Jermaine Sams after leading his team to a 19-15 win over Central (Baton Rouge). "We were backed up to our own one-yard line and our coaches said, 'let's just bomb it.'

"I outran the corner on a post route and raced for the touchdown. It was a big momentum changer. I also had a 50-yard TD catch on a fade route, but it got called back because of a penalty. The officials said that one of our offensive linemen was illegally downfield.

"We had a lot of penalties tonight, but it's all good. I had four catches for 128 yards, and I had a good return for 40 yards.

"Next week, we have Cohen (New Orleans) and we're going to continue getting ready for district."

Last year, St. Paul's was the only school to defeat Central in the regular season.

This was the second consecutive come-from-behind win for Sams and the Wolves, as Central held a 15-6 advantage at the half.

Sams committed to SMU on Labor Day earlier this week.
