Doherty gets 3-star big man

It's Matt Doherty's most highly rated verbal commitment since coming to SMU, Cannen Cunningham is a Mustang. He confirmed with PonyStampede.com in a text on Wednesday night. The Scout.com nationally ranked No. 18 center is the second commitment in two days for the basketball team.

The social media outlet had been buzzing for the last few hours with rumors of SMU's biggest basketball commitment in years. Now, PonyStampede.com can confirm that Arlington Lamar center/power forward Cannen Cunningham has committed to SMU. The DFW product is currently a 3-star prospect and is rated the No. 18 center in the country according to Scout.com.

"I committed to SMU earlier," Cunningham said in a text message to PonyStampede.com.

Cunningham also replied that he was about to go to sleep for the night, but PonyStampede.com will talk with the newest Mustang some time tomorrow.

Former Scout.com National Recruiting Director Dave Telep had this to say about Cunningham:

"Cunningham is a big who prefers facing and driving to working back to the basket. Definitely more of a skill guy than a power player. There's an element of upside to his game."

Cunningham chose SMU over offers from Boston College, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Colorado.

More to come tomorrow.
