SMU Recruiting Roundup

Abilene boasts two seniors - QB/WR Ronnell Sims (pictured) and WR/S Darius Joseph - with SMU offers and the Eagles are in action tonight on national television versus 5-1 Midland Lee. Get the details on that game and a look at other matchups involving SMU targets.

The nation will be watching tonight on television as Abilene ventures west on I-20 for a District 3-5A encounter with 5-1 Midland Lee.

The Eagles, 4-2 on the year, have emerged from a brutal non-district schedule and appear ready to peak down the stretch. Last week, Abilene routed Odessa (49-21).

WR/S Darius Joseph, who has an SMU offer, was all over the field in that game (2-32 receiving, 2 interceptions, 12 tackles). QB Ronnell Sims, who is being recruited by the Mustangs as a slot receiver, is racking up more than 240 yards of total offense per game.

Players to watch for Midland Lee include 6-foot-3 QB Adrian Horton, RB Travis Williams, and 6-foot-5 WR Corey McPherson, who caught a 27-yard TD pass from Horton in the Rebels' 56-52 loss to Abilene Cooper last Friday. Horton completed 21-of-30 passes for 274 yards in that game.

Serra and QB Conner Preston return to action this week after an open date. The 5-0 Cavaliers are up against 3-2 St. Francis (La Canada, Ca.) in the initial Mission League contest for each school.

There should be plenty of footballs in the air when Preston and St. Francis senior QB Brett Nelson go head-to-head. Each has thrown for close to 1,500 yards this year and both are completing nearly 65% of their passes.

The schools didn't meet last year; a season in which St. Francis went 9-3. The Golden Knights lack of the services of Dietrich Riley, who starred at running back last season (now at UCLA). Serra was 15-0 in 2009 and is currently riding a 20-game winning streak.

Katy Cinco Ranch and RB K.C. Nlemchi outlasted Houston Memorial last week (35-28) and the 6-0 Cougars have Strake Jesuit (1-5) up next. Nlemchi has 805 yards rushing with 12 TDs. He's added another reception for a score, to go along with a pair of two-point conversions.

Salesian and four-star Devon Moreland are seeking the school's 20th varsity league championship this season, and the 4-2 Mustangs begin Santa Fe League action on Saturday against 4-2 St. Genevieve (Panorama City, Ca.). Moreland has 7 sacks and is averaging 9.3 tackles per game.

Cornerback Rodney Hubert has helped Brenham to a 6-0 mark and the Cubs get District 17-4A co-leader Montgomery (6-0) this weekend. The visiting Bears rely heavily on Leroy Dobbins, who is averaging 144 rushing yards per game.

Dunham is making the most of transfer Nyle Johnson. The 4-2 Tigers like to move the SMU commit around, as Johnson logs time at RB, WR, DB, and KR. Dunham faces a stern test (and a raucous road atmosphere) this week at highly-ranked East Feliciana (5-0).
