'12 Waco DB takes in SMU/Houston

A plethora of SMU prospects watched the Mustangs host Houston last Saturday in Dallas. Among the Class of 2012 prospects was defensive back Trey Ridge of Waco La Vega HS. Find out more about Ridge, who was invited to the game by SMU assistant coach Derrick Odum.

Waco La Vega junior DB Treston Ridge (who goes by "Trey") is in his second year as a starter for the Pirates and the 5-foot-9, 170-pounder has some impressive credentials, including 4.60 speed and a 3.49 GPA.

"Trey has been getting letters every week from SMU," said his father, Myron Ridge. "(Defensive backs) Coach (Derrick) Odum invited him to the Houston game and we went up there. I also sent the coaching staff some tape of Trey last week.

"The rain on Saturday put a damper on things, but we still really enjoyed it and we may be back in two weeks."

Ridge, who plays safety for the 5-3 Pirates, has approximately 80 tackles this year along with an interception and a fumble recovery.

"Trey plays safety, rather than cornerback, so he can help in run support," said the elder Ridge. "He played cornerback earlier in his career and the coaches have thought about moving him back."

Ridge, according to his father, is also receiving steady interest from TCU and Texas Tech.

"I liked the facilities at SMU," said Ridge. "I hear a lot about the academics there and that's something that we - his mother and I - like to hear about. We've emphasized to Trey that academics come first."
