JUCO WR next in line for an offer?

The Mustangs are still looking for a good receiver to close out the 2011 class, and one prospect that fits the ball as an outside WR is Chase Fletcher of Santa Monica College.

"My coach told me that SMU will be here to watch practice," said Santa Monica WR Chase Fletcher, who prepped at St. Charles Catholic in LaPlace, Louisiana. "I'm going to try to show my best skills and catch some fades and some comebacks.

"Hopefully, SMU will offer me because I have the classes to transfer in the spring."

Fletcher, at 6-foot-2 and over 200 pounds, is a physically-imposing receiver who loves to block and he has also excelled in the classroom at Santa Monica, earning Student-Athlete of the Year honors.

Last week, Fletcher caught a pivotal 28-yard scoring strike in his team's 28-21 win over Glendale, and he totaled over 1,000 all-purpose yards as a freshman in 2009.

Three weeks ago, Fletcher again found the end zone on a five-yard TD reception in Santa Monica's win over Pierce.

For the year, the WR is second on the team with 33 receptions and four TDs. Those stats are somewhat deceptive, since the Gauchos have gone through three quarterbacks because of injury issues.

As a high school senior, Fletcher starred at both running back and wideout for St. Charles Catholic, which finished runner-up to John Curtis Christian and Joe McKnight in Class 2A.

He has the size and strength to overpower cornerbacks and the height to make the tough grab in the air. In addition, Fletcher (210 pounds) is capable of mixing it up with linebackers and safeties alike as a blocker.
