Focus 2012: DeAndre Liggins

When DeAndre Liggins gets his hands on the football, good things happen, as evidenced by his 13 TD catches last season. Read further to learn more about the south Texas speedster.

"I love the job they're doing at Texas A&M," said DeAndre Liggins (Cypress Ranch HS). "I attended their first game of the year, and I was the last person to give a high-five to Von Miller before he took the field. That felt good. They didn't get the win in the Cotton Bowl, but things are looking good for next year.

"I don't actually know what my favorite schools will be until I get offers, but I'd like to study mechanical engineering and play for A&M. They're a good program. Football is my number one goal, but football is also not everything. I'm hearing from Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Houston. I've gotten invites to Junior Days at a few of those schools."

Cypress Ranch is a new school that completed its first year of varsity football in 2010. The Mustangs won their inaugural game, 21-19, with Liggins catching a clutch 70-yard TD pass late in the contest.

"I'm going to play on both sides of the football next year," he said. "I had 38 catches with 13 touchdowns last year, although I'm not sure about the yardage. I don't concern myself with individual stats, but I do have breakaway speed. Some of my touchdowns were from 40-to-70 yards. I helped get us started right -- we won our first four games -- although we ended up 4-6.

"I'm trying to humble myself and lead by example. I'm an intense player. I have confidence, and I also want my teammates to have confidence in themselves. We have good coaches who tell us what we need to know. We're looking good for next year on defense; all of our starters will be returning. On offense, all of our receivers were juniors, so we'll be set there."

Liggins competes in several track and field events for Cypress Ranch. His specialty is the triple jump.

"My PR is 47 feet," he said. "I was one spot away from qualifying for state last year."
