Hopkins Discusses SMU Offer

Donald Hopkins, the quick-footed defensive tackle from Lago Vista (Tx.) HS, was among the first '12 prospects to receive an SMU offer. Get his reaction here and learn more about the junior prospect. He has very impressive speed for a 270-pound DT.

"Coach (Bert) Hill, the SMU defensive line coach, offered me after our first playoff game last year," said Donald Hopkins (6-1 1/2, 270, 4.9). "I was excited. I didn't know what to do. I went up there to the SMU/Marshall game, and I don't think it really dawned on me until then; that I have a full ride offer to a Division I school.

"I hadn't really heard about SMU until a couple of years ago, but I've started to get into them. I could see myself playing there. I watched the Hawaii Bowl a couple of years ago. I also have a friend who's playing there: Bryce Tennison."

Which other programs are recruiting Hopkins, and is he thinking about making an early commitment?

"SMU, Texas A&M, Baylor, and TCU are showing the most love," he said. "SMU and A&M are recruiting me the most. SMU is my only offer so far, and I'm going to wait awhile and see which other offers come along. I'm considering committing over the summer, prior to my senior year."

Lago Vista went 13-1 in 2010, advancing to the Class 2A Division I semifinals before losing to Cameron Yoe.

"We expected to go far," said Hopkins. "We worked our butts off during the offseason and wanted to be state champs. We plan to do it this year. We should do well again. We're going to go hard."

Last fall, Hopkins accounted for 45 tackles, "8-to-10 sacks and a lot of tackles for loss." He has remarkable speed (4.9) for his size.

"A lot of people say my speed is surprising," he said.
