"I met June Jones and the wide receivers coach (Jeff Reinebold) at SMU football camp. I'm impressed with the way Coach Jones has revived SMU's program from the downfalls they had in the past. Coach Jones is bringing SMU up to a national power and I'm not surprised, considering his background with coaching in the NFL. He had much success at Hawaii."
Atkinson, of course, likes SMU's style of offense.
"It's very wide receiver-friendly," he remarked.
Another favorite is Oklahoma.
"I'm a die-hard Sooners fan," explained Atkinson. "I have plenty of Oklahoma gear. I didn't really have a choice, growing up. My family loves Oklahoma football."
Atkinson has plans to attend Junior Days at both SMU and Oklahoma, and he's also hearing from Oklahoma State and Rice. Texas Tech and Baylor are additional schools of interest.
Last year, the junior caught 54 passes for 1,109 yards with 11 touchdowns. He also recorded "20 to 30 tackles" with three interceptions. His school, which is located in Arlington, produced another tall, outstanding WR (four-star Ross Apo) a couple of years ago. Apo signed with BYU out of high school.
