The national media has never exactly embraced the thought that USC commitment and 4-star wide receiver Jordan Payton could switch his verbal to SMU. After a spring break trip to Dallas over the weekend, it seems like the possibility is even stronger.
"I'm still 100% committed to USC, but SMU is definitely in the picture. I would say they are in a bigger picture now. A stronger position," stated Payton to Scout.com/FoxSports. "I have to talk to my parents about everything now. I have to get on the phone with Coach Jones and talk to them some more."
Payton visited with fellow Oak Christian's teammate Zach Hernadez and Santa Margarita Catholic offensive lineman Max Tuerk.
"To be honest with you, I loved it. It was an eye opener. I didn't realize that a college that small would be so great. It was definitely better than I expected it was going to be," said Payton who is being recruited by SMU offensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Adrian Klemm. "Coach Klemm and I really close and we just hung out a bunch this weekend. Our relationship just got closer so it was nice to be there. I talked to Coach Jones and he showed me the blue prints for the new locker room they are going to build. I also talked to the wide receivers coach, Jeff Reinebold, he's a really cool dude. I like him a lot.
"There pitch for me? It was that I could break NCAA records. I could be the player, the best wide receiver in the country in their system."
While this was not Payton's first tip to Texas, the junior had not been to Dallas before.
"It was really tight. I liked it a lot. The city is a place I could see myself playing in. I know a lot of people that are there, which I think would help a lot," said Payton. "Plus the people there are great. I met some fraternity guys and they acted like I was part of the family already. Like I was already playing for SMU. That was impressive."
