'11 Signee Spotlight: Daren Kitchen

SMU bolstered its secondary of the future on National Signing Day by landing three-star cornerback Daren Kitchen. Find out what the Louisiana DB has been up to since he inked with the Mustangs...

"Everything's cool," said Daren Kitchen, the low-key defensive back from Houma, Louisiana. "I've been trying to get to know my future teammates. I'm very happy with my decision to sign with SMU.

"My goal is to try and play early in college. I've been working out hard, so I can be in close to perfect shape when camp starts. We report on June 27th, and I'm looking forward to getting together with my team and getting started."

Which current and future Mustangs has Kitchen been in frequent contact with?

"I talk a lot with Jermaine Sams, Richard Crawford, Justin Sorrell, Cole Beasley, Randall Joyner, and Larry Centers," he said. "Coach (Jeff) Reinebold has kept in touch. I just talked to him last Friday or Saturday.

"School is on track. I have the test score that I need to qualify, and now I just have to complete the rest of my coursework. My parents think SMU is a good place, and they know I made the right decision."

Kitchen says he's put on close to 10 pounds, thanks to his diligent efforts in the weight room.

"I'm weighing 180," he said. "I'm been working hard on my bench press and squat, trying to get stronger."
