'11 Signee Spotlight: Jermaine Sams

SMU signed an impressive quartet of seniors from Louisiana this year, including St. Paul's (Covington) WR Jermaine Sams. Find out what Sams has been up to since he inked with the Mustangs...

"I've been working out and trying to get ready for June 27th, which is when we report," said Jermaine Sams, the senior wide receiver from southeast Louisiana. "I've been following the workout book that the coaches sent me, because the current players have told me that it's important for me to in top shape when I arrive in Dallas."

Sams doesn't expect to redshirt.

"Coach (Jeff) Reinebold told me I better be ready," he said. "I'm not going to be playing around when I get to camp. I want to try and jump in early. I most definitely believe I won't redshirt, unless I fail to pick up and learn the offense early."

A couple of months ago, Sams got some great news when he scored a 19 on the ACT.

"It felt good for me to qualify, but I wish I had scored higher," he said. "I know some fans thought I wasn't going to qualify, and there was the issue last year with a couple of players being denied admission - even though they were qualified under the NCAA Clearinghouse - but the coaches tell me I'm fully qualified and I will be admitted."

Which current players and fellow signees has Sams been in frequent contact with?

"I've talked to Kyle Padron a lot," he said. "He's always telling me things and giving me tips. We can't wait to play together. He'll ask me if I'm going hard in my workouts, and he's telling me that I will need to step in and play (as a true freshman).

"I've been talking to Daren Kitchen, Nyle Johnson, K.C. Nlemchi, and the two Abilene guys (Ronnell Sims and Darius Joseph). Darren, Nyle, and I are going to SMU on spring break to watch the team."

Sams helped St. Paul's record a perfect 10-0 regular season in 2010. The Wolves subsequently won two playoff games before losing on the road to eventual state champion Acadiana in the Class 5A quarterfinals.

Sams led the Wolves in receiving (36-659, 18.31 yards per catch, 6 TDs). He caught a 99-yard pass vs. Central (and fellow SMU signee James Richardson). Sams also averaged close to 30 yards per kickoff return.
