Barton looking to visit Hilltop

California 4-star linebacker Michael Barton had interest in SMU even before they reached out to him. Now the Mustangs have offered and the junior is looking to take a visit this summer.

There are no doubts that SMU has made major strides in their recruiting the last two years.

Not only have they improved efforts in Texas, but with SMU offensive line coach entrenched in California, the Mustangs are quickly becoming a popular choice.

Until now, it's been Klemm working the phone and sending hand written letters to recruits, trying to introduce them to a school nearly 1300 miles away.

In the near future, the SMU recruiting coordinator might not have to work as hard.

Early this month, 4-star California linebacker Michael Barton, a De La Salle high school product reached out to Klemm, hoping to get more information on the school.

"I was interested in SMU and contacted Coach Klemm to see if I could get more information on the team and college," said Barton. "We have been looking at SMU for a while and I expressed my interest to him. At that point, he said I was definitely a top player and it was then he extended me an offer.

"You know, I didn't even know about their recruiting efforts out here until I got offered. They then told me about the California guys they were getting and I was doing research, I thought wow, there are a lot of Top 20 kids on the roster."

As a junior, he recorded 72 tackles, three sacks, three pass breakups, and a fumble recovery, despite rarely playing a full game with the Spartans blowing teams out. His efforts earned him an all-state underclassman selection and the No. 17 OLB rating in the country.

"It would be great to get out to SMU this summer and see the school. I have track this spring, so I'm pretty busy every weekend right now, so I will take some visits then," said Barton. "I look at SMU and think they could be the next Boise, especially with June Jones and the things he is doing. The coaching staff has been to some good places. It's really interesting."

If Barton was to commit, he would be the highest rated player to commit to SMU in the June Jones era. Last year, Davon Moreland was rated a 4-star linebacker and No. 20 in the country, appearing in the Top 300.
