Neal Burcham commits to SMU

FOX Sports/ recruiting analyst Mike Coppage gives his take on why Neal Burcham is a perfect fit for SMU.

FOX Sports/ recruiting analyst Mike Coppage weighs on in one of SMU's newest commits, quarterback Neal Burcham (Greenbrier, Ark.).

"Neal Burcham to SMU is a logical choice because he fits June Jone's offense perfectly. When you watch Burcham on film, you could just as easily be watching tape of SMU. He fits in very well with the Mustangs' scheme.

"Burcham looks very confident and comfortable in the spread offense. It's second nature to him. He has good zip on the ball and specializes in making intermediate thorws to the center of the field. Burcham repeatedly puts the football perfectly in a receiver's breadbasket, so to speak.

"He usually leads his target with such precision that the receiver simply has to hang onto the pigskin when it arrives. That's easier said than done at times because Burcham has sufficient velocity to where receivers at the Elite 11 had trouble reeling in some of his throws.

"During the summer, Burcham burst onto the scene at the Elite 11, winning Co-MVP honors with five-star Florida State commit Jameis Winston and four-star BYU commit Tanner Mangum.

"Burcham outperformed huge names such as Gunner Kiel, who is Scout's top-ranked quarterback in the nation. He followed that up with a sensational start to his senior season, although there's been adversity down the stretch.

"Burcham's Greenbrier team started the year 8-2, but they're currently on a two-game losing streak. In week nine, he completed 42-of-61 passes for 456 yards and five touchdowns against Greenwood. However, he also tossed four interceptions. Last week, Burcham was knocked out of the game versus Vilonia with a knee injury.

"The playoffs are next on his agenda, so hopefully the injury was minor and he'll be able to lead his team to more victories."
