Howard hired as hoops assistant

As expected, Larry Brown has hired former Illinois assistant and current recruiting ace, Jerrance Howard, to be a part of his revamped staff at SMU.

As expected, SMU has hired former Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard to be an assistant under Larry Brown.

Howard joins a staff that includes Brown, Tim Jankovich, and per multiple reports though not officially announced by SMU yet, Ulric Maligi.

"There have been a lot of people interested in this job," Brown said in a statement. "Jerrance came highly recommended by Kansas Coach Bill Self as a person that would be able to help us build SMU to national prominence as we move into the Big East. I believe Jerrance will be a great representative for SMU as we work together to build Mustang basketball into a top-25 program."

Howard spent the past fives seasons at Illinois, his alma mater, under Bruce Weber. A recruiting ace, he practically recruited every player to Illinois while he was on staff.

As a player at Illinois, Howard was coached by Self and Jankovich was an assistant. Howard, a point guard, backed up New Jersey Nets star Deron Williams, who the Dallas Mavericks hope to snag this summer. Williams is a board member for the Jerrance Howard Foundation.

"I am excited to be here," Howard said in a statement. "SMU has all the pieces in place to be nationally competitive. I am looking forward to helping Hall of Fame Coach Brown return SMU basketball to national prominence."
