Mustangs' defensive coordinator Tom Mason called Baxter Friday afternoon to deliver the good news.
"Coach Mason called me and said, ‘We're going to offer you a scholarship,'" Baxter said. "[Mason] said he talked to coach [Jason] Phillips and he told him to go ahead and offer Jarvis Baxter and seal the deal."
Baxter, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound wide receiver out of Lakeview Centennial (Garland, Texas), was extremely excited about getting that first offer under his belt.
"It feels good," he said. "It feels good to know that I will have some place to call my home."
Baxter took in SMU junior day back in March. It was his second time on campus, as he attended a game last fall. During junior day he was able to meet Phillips and really took a liking to his possible future position coach.
Baxter will be on campus again for SMU camp on June 3. He said he might even come June 2, too. Before that he'll go to TCU's camp on May 31. Then on June 5, he'll head up to North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
But before summer camps begin, Lakeview Centennial is finishing up its spring season next week. Phillips is expected to drop in at some point.
Last season as a junior, Baxter had 36 receptions for 666 yards and seven touchdowns. He says he could see himself at SMU and that it would be a good fit, but is keeping his options open through the summer.
