Demun Mercer is still transitioning.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback transferred from Houston Chavez to La Marque in May and is still adjusting to his new school, which means his recruitment has taken a back seat.
However, Mercer, who expects to play wide receiver in college, says he's picked up the offense at his new school and will be visiting a few colleges this summer including SMU, which extended an offer this spring.
"I was really excited when it happened because I added my second offer," Mercer explained. "Coach Jason Phillips and another coach came to my school and talked to my coaches, and they decided to offer. I didn't get to talk to them much, but they told me they liked me."
Mercer says he plans on taking a trip to the Hilltop next month but first must reach out to a coaching staff that hasn't been in contact since extending the scholarship.
"I haven't really heard from SMU. They haven't called me so I plan on calling them this week," Mercer said. "I really want to set up a visit later in the summer and see where I stand with them."
The two-star prospect is intrigued by what the Mustangs have to offer and wants to familiarize himself with the Dallas-based program. Mercer admitted that he has never watched SMU play but is excited about the move to the Big East in 2013.
"I'm definitely interested in SMU. I don't know too much about them yet, but my parents have told me it's a really good school," Mercer said. "I'm looking forward to seeing it. I really like Dallas since I used to go there a lot for AAU tournaments, and it's not too far from home. They're also moving to a bigger conference, which is a plus."
Mercer also holds an offer from Rice and has been getting major interest from Baylor. Mercer said he plans to go down to Waco for a camp on July 21 and believes he has a ‘good chance' at adding a third offer to his list.
