Clear Falls (TX) offensive lineman Tristan Nickelson traveled around the nation this summer and participated in numerous camps in order to prove he's more than just a big body.
The 6-foot-8, 293-pounder's last stops included LSU and Vanderbilt, but his tour began in early June when he took part in SMU's satellite camp in Friendswood.
"I thought I did really well at their camp," Nickelson said. "We did a lot of one-on-one drills and general stuff. I got to work with some of the coaches, and they talked to me about my pass blocking stance."
Nickelson felt confident in his performance and it showed when earned an offer almost immediately after the camp concluded
"SMU offered a day after their camp," he said. "They confirmed everything with my high school coach, but I haven't really heard from them since."
Nickelson also holds offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Houston and Texas Tech. He explained that he has no favorites at the moment but knows exactly what he's looking for when it comes to selecting his future home.
"I'm looking for a school that has a top-25 engineering and football program I really want to go into mechanical engineering," Nickelson said. "I know Houston has a great program in both so I'm pretty interested in them. I've been trying to research all the other schools too."
SMU fits the description and the mammoth tackle is a former Dallas resident, but he admitted that he knows next to nothing about the Mustangs and is unsure if he's truly interested.
"I've never visited SMU, but I did used to live in Dallas. I love the area there. It's really beautiful," Nickelson said. "I just really don't know much about them. I really don't have a relationship with the coaches, and I'm not really familiar with the program."
Nickelson added that SMU is currently not in his visit plans but he would like to schedule trips to Michigan, Oregon, Stanford and Wisconsin.
