"I feel great. I'm comfortable with my decision. It took a lot of prayers, but I think I made the right one," said the newest member of the Mustang family.
Jeremiah Gaines of Red Oak (TX) gave a verbal commitment to SMU around 11 this morning and he says that the decision is final.
Gaines called his recruiter, defensive line Coach Bert Hill, and told him that he was ready to commit after he had SMU as his favorite for the past couple of weeks. Gaines said that Tuesday just felt like the right day to do it.
"I think I've been knowing for the past two or three weeks, but today just felt right so I made the decision," Gaines said.
In the end, the decision came down to SMU's prestigious academic program. Gaines plans to go to graduate school and has thoroughly researched SMU's theology program, which he is very impressed with.
"What came down to it with me was SMU's academics. They have top tier academics," Gaines said. "(Theology) I want to earn either a major or minor in that, and SMU's graduate school is one of the best in the country."
Gaines, who will line up in a hybrid tight end position for the Mustangs, is thrilled to be able to play football for head coach June Jones and thinks that the Run N' Shoot will suit him well.
"As an offensive player, you like touching the ball of course," Gaines said about Coach Jones' willingness to spread the ball around in his offense. "It's going to be a great experience I'm excited to see what's going to happen."
Gaines' parents, who will now be able to see Gaines live on the Hilltop, backed his decision whole-heartedly and are glad he decided to become a Mustang.
"They agree with the decision completely," Gaines said. "I came to them on Sunday and said I think I'm going to commit, and they agreed with it. They said they'd go along with whatever my final decision was."
