Player Profile Series: DE Kevin Grenier

With fall camp nearing, the PS staff will profile all 22 projected starters throughout July. Today we take a look at senior defensive end Kevin Grenier.

Kevin Grenier

Position: Defensive End

Size: 6-5, 265

Classification: Senior

High School: Salpointe (AZ)

2011 Review: Received medical redshirt

2011 Grade: Incomplete

2012 Outlook: SMU is very lucky to have Kevin Grenier back for another year. He was awarded a medical redshirt after suffering a shoulder labrum tear early in the season, which forced him to miss nine games. Grenier also missed all of spring as he continued to rehab and get back to full strength.

But SMU fans shouldn't be worried. Grenier will be ready by the time fall camp starts and should be a nice compliment to fellow defensive end Margus Hunt. The departure of Taylor Thompson means Grenier has some big shoes to fill in his first year as a full-time starter.

Luckily for the Mustangs, Grenier has some good playing experience and was a factor in the rotation in 2010. As a junior, he logged 16 tackles including 4.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. Hunt may be the expert when it comes to blocking kicks, but Grenier, who blocked three, isn't too shabby at the craft either.

The bottom line is Grenier has the experience and physical tools to really make an impact this season. If he is truly 100 percent healthy then there is no reason not to believe that Grenier is in store for a big season. With Grenier and Hunt breathing down opposing quarterbacks' necks, SMU should create a lot more turnovers in 2012.
