Ekpe enjoys SMU visit

Lewisville (TX) defensive end Hendrick Ekpe visited SMU this past weekend. Is he close to making a final decision?

With Luca Bruno off the board, SMU is still looking to fill a big need along the defensive line. Lewisville (TX) defensive end Hendrick Ekpe is the top priority along with Waco's Andrew Billings and be a huge addition to the Class of 2013.

Ekpe visited SMU earlier this summer but was back on the Hilltop for another unofficial this past weekend.

"Everything went well. I visited a couple of months ago and got to tour the campus, but this time it was mainly watching practice," Ekpe said. "I thought practice looked good. SMU has a really good team. I liked all the facilities and everything was really nice."

Ekpe, along with SMU commit Jesse Brubaker, spent most of the three-hour practice observing the defensive linemen. Ekpe said he enjoyed seeing the defensive and offensive lines go head-to-head the most and was familiar with all the drills.

"I think I could be a good fit. We pretty much do the same things in high school as SMU does except for a couple of things," Ekpe said. "We work on the fundamentals just like SMU does so I'm used to it. At Lewisville, we also run a 3-4 so I think I could really fit in."

During and after practice, Ekpe had the opportunity to converse with nearly the entire SMU coaching staff and even met new athletic director Rick Hart.

"I talked to almost every coach and even the athletic director. That was pretty cool. It was nice to meet everyone," Ekpe said. "June Jones is a really great coach. I didn't get to talk to him for a long time, but he seemed like a great guy. I've researched and read about him."

Ekpe's father accompanied him on the visit and was able to sit down with down with his recruiter, Bert Hill, to talk about what SMU can offer both on and off the field.

"Coach Hill was just basically telling us everything they do. He was filling me and my dad in on the inside action," Ekpe said. "My dad really thinks SMU is a good school especially for education. Everyone knows about SMU for its education, and that's the main goal."

Ekpe currently has SMU in his top four along with Houston, Minnesota and Tulsa. He expects to make a final decision by the start of school but said he could possibly wait till after he takes official visits to Minnesota and Tulsa.
