Gaines Updates Commitment Status

Jeremiah Gaines committed to SMU this summer and was recently on the Hilltop for an unofficial visit. Is his verbal still solid?

Of the three blowout games that SMU has competed in thus far, they've only come out on the winning side of one of them. Unfortunately, Red Oak (TX) tight end Jeremiah Gaines witnessed SMU take a thrashing by Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M but said that he still enjoyed the overall experience.

"I don't want to say it was better than I expected because I really didn't know what to expect, but it was a great atmosphere," said the 2013 SMU commit.

Gaines, who is looked at as one of the gems of the SMU recruiting class, said that he was impressed with the Mustangs' first half defensive effort despite the offensive struggles.

"I liked the way they competed. The defense played real well the first half, and I think the offense just couldn't get started," Gaines said. "It's just the third week so I think TCU will be better."

Gaines does plan to attend SMU's game against rival TCU this Saturday and thinks that the Ponies still have a good chance at winning the conference but will have to beat a couple of teams that have played fairly well in the first quarter of the season.

"I want them to win the conference. The only tough schools I think will be UTEP and Tulsa," Gaines said. "UTEP has been competing very well with some teams that I thought they would honestly get demolished by."

Gaines' Red Oak team is 1-2 and also coming off a bye week. While Gaines says that he's looking for his team to compete and earn victories, he has also been finding ways to fine-tune his own game and is hoping to lead his team into the highly esteemed Texas high school playoffs.

"To be honest I just want to go into every game and compete and win," Gaines said. "I want to focus on staying low because I have the tendency to sometimes get high but besides that. I don't have any specific stats I want to get, I just want to go in there and get wins and make the playoffs."

So far, Gaines has been a major presence in his team's offense earning 160 yards and five touchdowns on 16 rushes, and 223 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions- all of which came in just three games.

As he has stated clearly time and time again, Gaines' verbal commitment to SMU is still very strong. "It is solid," he said emphatically.
