SMU Commit Recaps Visit

Gilmer (TX) DB Trey Washington was on the Hilltop this past weekend to watch the Battle for the Iron Skillet. Did he enjoy his time at the game?

After cancelling his visit two weeks ago, Gilmer (TX) defensive back Trey Washington was finally able to make it to SMU this past Saturday and watched the Mustangs take on TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet.

Despite stormy conditions and a close loss, the SMU commit enjoyed his time on Hilltop and said he ‘can't wait to go back.'

"The weather didn't really affect me. I love watching football in any weather. Overall, I thought it was pretty nice," Washington said. "I got to go to a big college football game and see a great rivalry. There was a lot of animosity and intensity for the Iron Skillet. It was just a fun experience."

Washington has received letters from a couple of different schools but his verbal remains in tact especially after getting to experience game day at SMU.

"My commitment is really solid," he said. "Watching the game really helped. The atmosphere was amazing. It's one of those things that you want to experience. There were a lot of fans to watch SMU play."

This past Friday, Washington helped lead Gilmer to a 21-13 victory over Gladewater. The senior has notched 16 tackles and one interception this season and expects to play in the defensive backfield at SMU, which is why he paid extra attention to the Mustang safeties and corners.

"I was really focused on the secondary," Washington said. "We do a lot of different coverages here at Gilmer. You name it we do it. SMU does a lot of those things so I think it will be a pretty easy transition."

Washington said that he did not get to speak with the SMU coaches but will be in contact with Bert Hill this week to set up his official visit.
