FREE: Lancaster Commits To SMU

Houston Lamar DB Cendric Lancaster picked up an offer from SMU on Monday and committed on Tuesday. Get the details inside!

SMU picked up a huge commitment from JUCO running back Traylon Shead yesterday and received more good news when Houston Lamar cornerback Cedric Lancaster gave his verbal on Tuesday morning.

"I was actually going to commit Monday, but I had to discuss it with my dad. My mom said it was cool, and she really liked it," Lancaster said. "We actually all went up there in the summer and liked the campus and the facilities. I've actually wanted to go there since my sophomore year."

SMU wide receivers coach Jason Phillips had previously developed a relationship with Lancaster during his time at Houston and extended the offer on Monday. It didn't take long for Lancaster to realize he wanted to be a Mustang.

"Coach Phillips called and offered. I was really excited about it," Lancaster said. "He he was really down to earth. He actually came by when he at UH so I got to chat with him a while back. He's really cool, and he definitely knows what he's talking about."

During their conversation, Phillips let Lancaster know that SMU head coach June Jones would like to use him on the offensive side of the ball as well. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound prospect has experience in the slot and said he wouldn't mind catching a few passes.

"Coach Phillips said the head coach wanted me as an athlete so I could play receiver or corner. I think they need help in the defensive back area though, but it doesn't matter to me. I just want to be a big part of the team and help them win."

Lancaster also held an offer from Colorado State but said he's not too interested and is looking forward to his official visit to SMU, which he plans to take ‘soon.'
