When Cedric Lancaster committed to SMU on Tuesday, Zelt Minor knew he had a big decision to make. The two have dominated the field together at Houston Lamar and planned to play together at the next level, but a mutual offer had yet to present itself.
"Me and Cedric have a strong bond. We were just waiting for a school to offer both of us. We grew up together and always wanted to play in college together. When SMU offered him, it allowed me to make the switch and he was really excited."
Minor originally committed to Houston in June but decommitted on Wednesday evening and immediately called SMU wide receivers coach Jason Phillips to let him know he wanted to be a Mustang.
"I called Coach Phillips, and he told me to call my high school coaches first and get their thoughts on it," Minor said. "Then I called Houston and let them know I was switching my commitment. I called Coach Phillips back, and he told me he was excited to have me."
Lancaster was naturally the next person to find out it was official.
"I felt great when he did (commit)," Lancaster said. "Zelt is like my brother and being able to play with him on the next level is going to be exciting. I just told him to pony on up."
The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder also plays defensive tackle in high school but feels he can be a dominant defensive end at the next level and wants to make an immediate impact on the Hilltop as a true freshman.
"I fee like I can come in and work hard," Minor said. "I feel like I can perform right away and start as a freshman. I don't want to redshirt. I love being on the field, and that's where I'm going to be."
Lancaster agrees and also believes Minor will be a force to be reckoned with.
"Zelt is going to bring a big bang to the SMU defense," Lancaster said. "He is the best defensive lineman in the state. No offensive lineman can hold him."
The duo plan to make a trip to SMU together soon and are both solid.
