Rhodes Enjoys Visit

SMU commit and West Orange Stark DB J'Marcus Rhodes was on the Hilltop for an unofficial visit. Did it solidify his verbal?

When J'Marcus Rhodes picked up an offer from SMU in early October, it didn't take long for him to pull the trigger and commit. But Rhodes had never been on the Hilltop and got most of information about SMU online.

That all changed this past Saturday when Rhodes took an unofficial visit to SMU and saw the Ponies dominate Memphis for homecoming.

"It went well. The atmosphere was good," Rhodes said. "I really liked that George Bush was there to flip coin. It was cool to be able to stand right next to a former president. I really liked the campus a lot too and everyone was great."

During the game, Rhodes paid close attention to the defense and after watching the Mustangs in action, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder feels he can make an immediate impact in the defensive backfield as a cornerback.

"I was a little scared at halftime, but I was happy they were able to get the win," Rhodes. "I really watched the defense, and I think I will be able to fit in as a corner. If they need me to play safety, I can play there too. But as far as their performance, the defense was superb."

Before the game Rhodes had the opportunity to speak to his future position coach Derrick Odum and head coach June Jones.

"Coach Odum asked me how I liked it, and I told him I loved it. He talked about the defense and said he wished I was already there and ready to play," Rhodes said. "At first, I was nervous about meeting Coach Jones, but he was cool guy. He said to keep my grades up, and I can tell he wants to win."

Rhodes has also attracted interest from Mississippi State and now Iowa State, which has been in contact ever since he committed to SMU. But for now, Rhodes says he has no plans to decommit any time soon.

"I'm going to say 90 percent that the door is shut," he said. "But I'll have to see what else comes up."
