We are here in the press box and it's pouring but we are ready for some football. Kickoff is in 25 minutes!

We are underway! Make sure to check back at the end of the first quarter for our thoughts!

Offensively, SMU is doing a great job of pounding this Southern Miss defense. And it's not just Zach Line. Garrett Gilbert broke loose for 25 yards and then scored on a 36-yard TD run.

It looks like June Jones is finally adjusting his strategy is playing to the team's strengths. Line is getting tons of carries and is punishing opposing defenders while screens to Jeremy Johnson are working to perfection.

Austin Fuller started out wide today, which was a pleasant surprise. He has some of the best hands on the team and can make plays if allowed to. Smart decision especially with no production at the position.

Defensively, SMU is playing lights out and has forced two three and outs. Kevin Grenier recorded a sack and Taylor Reed continues to man down the D.

Offensively, SMU settled down a bit in the second quarter and looked more like the old Mustangs. Luckily for them, the defense and special teams came through again and set up three scores.

The first came after a 49-yard kickoff return by Der'rikk Thompson, which led to a 33-yard field goal by Chase Hover. However, that possession could have easily resulted in a touchdown. But June Jones made a bad play call on a third-and-2 and the Ponies did not execute.

Margus Hunt, who made his first career interception in Southern Miss territory, set up the next score. All June had to do was call a couple of run plays to Zach Line and SMU took a 20-6 lead just before halftime.

Defensively, SMU is still playing extremely well but the secondary looks shaky once again especially Chris Parks. The Mustangs allowed Southern Miss to pass for its first touchdown since September.

But nickleback Jeremy Gray recorded an interception after Southern Miss QB Chris Campbell was rocked by Ja'Gared Davis. That led to a Gilbert TD pass to Darius Johnson.

Not much to write about in the third quarter. The offense has been pretty bland and hasn't been able to get anything going. Neither team crossed midfield and it's been punt palooza.

But the defense has been playing extremely well. The Mustangs have knocked two QB's out of the game and forced numerous punts throughout the quarter. Ja'Gared Davis has been a beast and is causing the most disruption.

It looks like SMU will cruise to a victory with a 21-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. 9:15

SMU had an opportunity to put the final nail in the coffin early in the fourth but instead failed to score from the 4. Chase Hover's field goal was blocked and returned into SMU territory.

But as usual the SMU defense stepped up and forced a punt. Garrett Gilbert came back and scored on a 19-yard run late in the quarter and put the game way out of reach. He is really becoming a threat with his legs.

With the win, SMU gets back to .500 at 5-5 and will have to wine one of its final two games to become bowl eligible. The Ponies head to Rice next week for the most important game of the year.
