After straddling the fence for the past couple of weeks, Dallas Madison (TX) cornerback Jesse Montgomery chose SMU over New Mexico as the place where he'll play football for the next four years.
Montgomery called his recruiter, defensive line coach Bert Hill, around 2 p.m. on Wednesday and told him that he was committed to being a Mustang. Montgomery says that he is extremely grateful.
"It is an honor," Montgomery said. "Any offer that anyone gets is really an honor. It wasn't guaranteed that I was going to get an offer, and they could have always taken it back. I‘m grateful."
Montgomery had been leaning towards SMU since he visited the campus. which he said was beautiful. He added that there were a few things that won him over including the opportunity to meet the entire SMU football team as well as watch them practice.
However, Montgomery says that the number one factor in his decision to commit to SMU was their superb academics. Montgomery, who aspires to become an engineer, says SMU's Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering was very attractive to him and that was what made the difference.
"The name SMU holds a lot of weight," Montgomery said. "Not saying that New Mexico isn't a good school, I just had to make the best academic move for myself because football is going to be football when it's all over and done with. If I'm not able to play the next day then I need to be able to get my education. Football isn't forever."
Montgomery wants to come in and compete for playing time right away and vows to outwork anyone. The cornerback says that no wide receiver has caught a touchdown on him all year or notched more than ten yards. Montgomery wants to bring that same dominance to SMU.
"I just need to be able to outshine the next person no matter who he is, no matter who we play or who we face," Montgomery said. "It doesn't matter what conference, your ranking or how good you are, I'm going to play you regardless."
Montgomery, who initially wanted to go to rival TCU, says that he is more than happy with his decision and says that he is confident that it is final.
"I am very solid," he said.
