Scouting Report: Justin Lawler

Leading up to National Signing Day, Pony Stampede will be providing scouting reports on each SMU commit by talking to their high school coaches and gaining insight on the future Mustangs!

For Pottsboro (TX) defensive end Justin Lawler, arriving on the SMU campus for his freshman year has been something he's been waiting for since early June. The 2-star prospect committed to the Mustangs in the beginning of summer, over offers from UTSA and North Texas, and will look to provide depth on a defensive line that loses star Margus Hunt.

We caught up with his high school coach Matt Poe to gain a deeper understanding on how the future Mustang's senior season went, and how he will fit in at SMU.

How big of an impact did Justin have on your team this year?

Justin had a huge impact on offense and defense. Offensively, he was utilized as a tight end and wide receiver. Having a player as talented and versatile as Justin allowed us to expand our offense. He made many big plays both catching the ball and blocking. Defensively, he was our "bell cow", he made everyone around him a better football player. His aggressiveness was contagious.

What are Justin's best skills and attributes?

Justin's best skill is rushing the passer. He has very good instincts to go a long with his quickness and size. His best attribute is his work ethic. He will not be out worked by anyone. During the season, we finished practice about 5:30 everyday and Justin would go home and eat dinner and then come back to lift weights. He is extremely dedicated to becoming the best football player he can become.

What does Justin need to improve upon?

He needs to improve his size. He now weighs around 230 pounds but needs gain as much weight as possible.

Will Justin make an immediate impact at SMU, or need time to develop?

I believe Justin can make an immediate impact at SMU. He plays and practices as hard as anyone I've ever been around. He will give 100% effort 100% of the time.

Why is SMU a good fit for Justin?

SMU is a good fit for Justin. From the first time Coach Hill talked with him he has felt SMU is the place for him. He had a great visit to SMU and any reservations he might have had were eliminated. Coach (Bert) Hill did a wonderful job recruiting him.
