Lance Cottrell committed to SMU on Jan. 10 to become the Mustangs first commitment for the 2014 class. The younger brother of Texas defensive end Bryce Cottrell, Lance had been on SMU's radar since Adrian Klemm was at SMU and is an intuiting first pick up for the Ponies.
Strengths: Cottrell is 6-foot-2, 190-pounds and has some room to fill out over the next year before getting to SMU. If Cottrell can fill out to 220-230 pounds, he can be a true terror and even be a pass rushing specialist off the edge in passing situations early in his career before taking over for Randall Joyner and Kevin Pope inside. He is tenacious off the edge and plays low to the ground, which allows him to get around slower linemen.
With a 4.8 forty and a 31" vertical that he should in improve over time, Cottrell has the athletic ability to be a freak of nature like Ja'Gared Davis and Stephon Sanders are on the SMU defense.
Weaknesses: Cottrell is playing out of position but has trouble reading the run and recognizing the run. He plays low with his arms extended, which is a plus, but does not get off blocks as quickly as he should. Cottrell makes up for this by being able to chase down ball carriers down the field using his athletic ability.
Once Cottrell is playing in a two-point stance, he should be able to read better playing off the edge and outside the tackle instead of lining up head up with the tackle.
Bottom Line: Cottrell is playing out of position at defensive end, but is going to be able to use his athleticism to play outside or inside linebacker at SMU. Cottrell also has impressive strength with a 285-pound bench and 360-pound squat.
