SMU Offers 2014 Houston Area DB

SMU recently offered 2014 Alief Taylor defensive back Josh Kalu. Come inside to find out if he's interested!

Before visiting Dallas Skyline on Thursday, SMU wide receivers coach Jason Phillips was in Houston visiting with Alief Taylor defensive back Josh Kalu.

"I was in my basketball workout when my head coach came through the door with Coach Phillips," Kalu said. "He talked to me and told me he really liked my film. I was excited when he showed up, and he was really cool."

When Kalu made his way to the cafeteria for lunch, he found out Phillips had officially extended an offer. The 2014 prospect was stunned. No other schools had been in contact so picking up an offer from SMU ‘was a dream come true.'

"I'm just so happy that I picked up a Division I offer," Kalu said. "I'm pretty interested in SMU. I know they had some trouble in the past with the Death Penalty, but they are an up and coming program with a good record. I'm looking to study nursing and SMU is also a great academic school."

Kalu says he will be doing more research on SMU in coming weeks but is disappointed he won't be able to get to see the campus in person. Phillips did extend a junior day invitation but Kalu will not be able to attend due to ‘travel arrangements.'

Instead, the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder will stay at home and continue to condition by playing basketball and running. This past season Kalu was named District 18-5A Defensive Newcomer of the Year after leading Alief Taylor to an 8-4 record.

But he has bigger expectations for 2013.

"Last season was great. We had a strong defensive line, which made my job easier," he said. This year, I feel I have to step up and be a leader. My leadership is actually my best attribute and something I can really bring to a Division I program.

"Right after basketball, I just want to get bigger and stronger so I can help my team go farther in the playoffs."
