When SMU offered 2014 Allen outside linebacker Christian Sam, the Eagles were in the midst of a state title run. While recruiting took a back seat, Sam helped guide Allen to a victory in the 5A Division I state championship game over Houston Lamar.
Now that the season is over and he has a ring on his finger, Sam can turn his focus to learning more and more about SMU, starting with a trip right down US-75 for junior day.
"I should be there with Tay Evans and some other teammates," Sam said. "I want to catch up with the coaches, and it would be really nice to view the entire campus. I'm really high on SMU right now.
"They are close to home, and I know they're a great program. The Texas vs. the Nation Bowl was played at our stadium so I got to watch Ja'Gared Davis practice. I know SMU is doing great things with their linebackers so I'm excited."
Sam says he has only been in contact with his recruiter Tom Mason ‘here and there' but hopes to sit down with him this weekend and go over exactly how he'll fit into SMU's 3-4 defensive scheme.
"Coach Mason is definitely a cool guy. It will be nice to meet with him face to face again and go over some things about the defense and just SMU in general," Sam said. "I know he's not uptight so I look forward to getting to know him better especially since he's the defensive coordinator."
As Sam mentioned, Evans, who holds an SMU offer will also be at junior day along with defensive back Mayomi Olootu, defensive back Chad Adams and center Tejan Koroma.
"It'll be pretty cool to go down there with some teammates," Sam said. "Me and Tay have talked a little bit about going to school together. I guess you could say we're a little like a package deal. I know we both do like SMU."
Since picking up offers from SMU, both Evans and Sam have each picked up an offer from Boise State.
"Their linebackers coach Bob Gregory watched our film and decided to offer both of us," Sam said. "I've never been to Boise State, but they obviously have a great team. I'm definitely interested and want to visit."
Sam has also received interest from a few Big 12 programs including Baylor, which he visited for junior day this past weekend.
"Baylor was really nice. They have some great things going on there," Sam said. "They didn't offer, but they said that I'm really high on their list and that they really liked me."
Sam doesn't have any other junior day visits scheduled but is excited about the Nike football training camp in April.
