Shocked is the word C.J. Reese used most often when talking about his new offer from SMU.
The San Antonio Madison defensive end had been in contact with SMU defensive line coach Bert Hill for just over a year now. But getting an offer from the Ponies was still surreal.
"My head coach texted me and told me SMU had offered, and I was just so excited," Reese said. "It's like a gift from God."
Although Reese did not get to speak directly with Hill about the offer on Sunday, he said he will be in contact with him this week. The two developed a strong relationship after Reese was on the Hilltop for a camp last summer.
"It all started last summer. I went to one of SMU's camps, and Coach Hill said he was impressed with me," Reese said. "He wrote letters to me throughout the year, and I even saw SMU play when they played at Baylor. I knew last week they were close to offering so I'm glad he did."
But despite having numerous conversations with Hill, Reese admits he doesn't know very much about SMU. The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder hopes to learn more from Hill this week as well as what position he's getting recruited at.
"I know a little bit from what Coach Hill has told me but not too much. Now that SMU has offered, I'm definitely going to do more research," he said. "I feel like I can play defensive end or slide in to nose guard so I'm excited about talking to Coach Hill."
SMU wasn't the only school to extend an offer this weekend. Colorado also threw its name in the hat. But Texas is where Reese truly wants to play and hopes he picks up an offer from the Longhorns after visiting for junior day this weekend.
"Junior day at Texas was amazing," Reese said. "I grew up a Longhorns fan so it's always been my dream school. I just hope they decide to offer."
Reese currently has no other junior day trips slated but says he hopes to make it SMU's second junior day in April.
