Colon Interested In SMU After Visit

Los Fresnos (TX) wide receiver Brandon Colon was on the Hilltop for SMU junior day. Is he close to picking up an offer? Come inside to find out!

It's not often the Rio Grande Valley produces FBS recruits. But Los Fresnos wide receiver Brandon Colon is trying to defy the odds.

Originally from Sherman, Colon isn't truly a ‘valley kid' but getting noticed in Deep South Texas is still hard work. But one program that has been keeping a close eye on Colon is SMU.

"They invited me to one of their camps last summer, and they've kept in contact since," Colon said. "They also invited me to one of their games this year. I really enjoyed watching them beat Southern Miss. The campus is small, but there was a bunch of fanfare going on so it was a good atmosphere."

Colon returned to Dallas just a few short weeks ago for SMU junior day and was blown away with everything SMU had to offer.

"I liked the campus a lot because it's in the middle of Dallas. I had been there before, but I got see a lot more this time," Colon said. "SMU is just beautiful. My parents are really high on academics, and I know SMU is a good school too."

While on campus, Colon also had the opportunity to speak with his recruiter, SMU defensive line coach Bert Hill. Although their conversation was brief, Colon said Hill really made the program sound like the place to be.

"He told me what you see is what you get," Colon said. "He said SMU is on the rise and even though they weren't a Big 12 or an SEC program, they were going to keep winning and building a great program."

SMU hasn't extended an offer but the 6-foot-4, 195-pounder is hopeful the Mustangs will during the season. He also has interest from Ivy schools as well as North Texas.
