Whoever said SMU has beef with big wide receivers had to be surprised when the Mustangs offered East Bernard (TX) wide out Trevor Long.
Long brought every inch of his 6-foot-5 210-pound frame through the doors of the Lloyd All-Sports Center a couple of weekends ago for the SMU junior day and says he was pleased with his experience.
"I thought it was pretty nice up there," Long said. "It's a smaller college so you get to know your professors better which is good because academics are important to me. I felt like they have a good coaching staff too. They have a lot of professional coaches which was surprising."
While on campus Long learned about SMU's curriculum and academic programs, toured facilities and got an in-depth look into the athletic training rooms. Long also got the chance to meet his recruiter, running backs coach Wes Suan, who extended an offer.
Suan told Long that they were offering him based off of his ‘athletic ability' but Long has a hunch that the Mustangs will be looking at him as either a tight end or wide receiver.
Long has decided not to formulate a ranking of his favorite schools just yet and says he is not looking for any particular schools to court him. He just wants to keep an open mind.
"I just want to keep my options open," Long said. "I'm looking for a school with a successful football program obviously, and a good academic reputation."
Long has recently been preparing to participate in upcoming spring activities such as track and field but has also been concentrating on offseason workouts to raise his game on the football field after helping his team win the 2A Division II title last season.
"Right now I'm training for track and getting ready for the next football season," Long said. "We do all kinds of agility drills, cone drills, ladders, and lots of conditioning and lifting weights obviously."
Currently, Long's only other offer is from Rice. However, he has been contacted by a number of other schools including Houston and UTSA.
Long says he plans to take a trip down to Houston to see the Owls' campus in a couple weeks during his Spring Break. Long has yet to receive any other junior day invitations and has not taken any other visits.
