Manvel center Cory Klingler took back-to-back visits last Friday and Saturday to SMU and Tulsa, respectively. But Klingler enjoyed his time on the Hilltop and was surprised by how football oriented the school is.
"It was real nice," Klingler said. "There are dorms within about 200 feet of the football stadium and the football field is on the edge of campus so if you decide to go off campus to get to the apartment, you're only two or three minutes away."
The 6-foot-4 290-pound offensive lineman, who holds offers from Rice, Memphis, Old Dominion, SMU, Kansas State and Wake Forest, says he is pleased with his current list of offers, but it also makes him want to work harder to get more looks.
Klingler said of all the schools that have offered him thus far, SMU and Wake Forest are at the top of his list.
"Those schools seem to fit what I'm looking for as a school and as a football program," Klingler said.
More than anything, Klingler says he can contribute leadership and dedication in his first year on campus even though there is a decent chance he will receive a redshirt.
Klingler says the part of his game he needs to work on most is his strength.
"I'm pretty strong but I'm not where I need to be to have a solid freshman year of college," he said. "I will be red-shirted most likely so that will really make time for me to get into the weight room."
This offseason, Klingler does not plan to work on anything specific but does plan to continue to improve his footwork as well as his strength.
Klingler also wants to take a few more visits. He says his hopes are to attract offers from a few of the bigger schools on his list- one of which he thinks might offer soon.
"The top three schools I'd like to get an offer from are Oregon, Alabama and Texas A&M," Klingler said. "I've communicated with Oregon and Alabama fairly well. I think that sometime this spring Alabama should offer and if Oregon can get down here this summer, they should as well."
Klingler says before SMU ends their spring practices he plans to take another visit to the Hilltop to see first-hand how the Mustangs look on the field as a team and how the coaches run practices. April 20 is the date that he is shooting for.
