Louisiana Corner High On SMU

West Saint Mary CB Kylon Brown recently visited SMU...

West Saint Mary (LA) class of 2014 athlete Kylon Brown has received interest from plenty of schools around the nation. Last month, he visited SMU for the spring game and had very positive things to say about the trip.

"I loved the school when I came and visited," he said. "I talked to Coach (June) Jones, Coach (Jason) Philips, and Coach (Tom) Mason. They were all really cool. I plan on taking another visit, I just don't know when."

Brown has played both cornerback and wide receiver in high school and says he enjoys playing both positions equally. He also sounded very optimistic that an offer from SMU would be coming soon.

"I haven't received an offer yet, but they really like me so I believe I'm close," he said. "They haven't told me anything specifically, but I have heard they will be converting me to wide receiver."

Other schools interested in Brown are Louisiana Tech, Virginia Tech, Colorado, and more. SMU wide receiver Daijuan Stewart is Brown's cousin and has told him a lot about the Hilltop.

"He told me it's a really, really nice school and a good place for me to go," Brown said. "Not too big and not too small, so the coaches will work with me and care about me. I wont be just another number at SMU."

Brown is trying to make the school's camp in June but says his summer schedule is very busy. After recording only three interceptions last season, Brown is working hard to improve his ball skills in the offseason.

"I want to get at least six or seven interceptions and a lot more tackles," he said. "I'm working on my abilities in man and zone coverage. I know my man coverage is really solid but now, I want to work on being more physical and effective in the run game."

Brown maintains a 3.7 GPA in school and says it's easy for him to balance academics and football. Combine that work ethic with a speedy 40-time, and it's easy to see why coaches love him.

"My coach told me my biggest strength is my ability to read plays," Brown said. "I have a natural ability to tell what the other team is doing as it develops and react to it. I can just tell by the quarterback and receivers' body language what they want to do."

Brown seems to have a built a good relationship with the SMU coaching staff and his family ties with the school should help with the recruiting process.
