Mount St. Joseph (MD) guard Phil Booth is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing prospects in the Class of 2014. This past weekend at the Nike EYBL session in Dallas, Booth expressed his interest in SMU.
"I'm pretty interested in SMU," he said. " I like the school, I like the location and I like the coaching staff. Coach (Larry) Brown and Coach (Ulric) Maligi are really cool."
Booth, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound combo guard from the Baltimore area, describes himself as a ‘scorer that can also distribute.' Team Takeover, led by Booth, went 4-0 during the event, and he combined for 36 points and 12 rebounds in 81 total minutes
"It was a pretty good performance," he said. "We came out with the wins and that's all that really matters."
Booth is a prototypical shooting guard with an incredibly smooth jumper and excellent basketball I.Q. He plays with great body control and has the ability to guard multiple positions on defense.
Booth ranks as the 10th best shooting guard and is rated as a four-star. He averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists as a junior last season and led Mount St. Joseph to a 31-8 record.
Since then, Booth has received interest from multiple schools around the country. He now has over 15 scholarship offers, including Georgetown, Maryland, Indiana, and Villanova. However, the four-star recruit says SMU's coaching staff has stood out to him in some ways.
"I have talked to Larry Brown on the phone a couple times," he said. "I know they want me down there, so I plan on taking a visit. We just haven't figured out a date yet. Anytime a Hall of Famer wants to talk, you have to listen."
Booth will use the summer to improve his game and learn more about the schools currently recruiting him. He says he is looking for a good mix of academics, tradition, diversity, and fun. Although he wasn't ready to call anyone a favorite, Booth said he is hoping to make his decision sometime in the fall.
