Hill, Mason Offer Jefferson

Athens ATH Chris Jefferson picked up an offer from SMU this week

SMU defensive line coach Bert Hill had already been to Athens once this spring. On Wednesday, he returned with defensive coordinator Tom Mason to watch 2014 athlete Chris Jefferson.

With Mason's nod of approval, Hill wasted no time and offered Jefferson immediately after his workout.

"I was there doing my defensive drills and saw them watching me. I just did my normal workout and footwork drills," Jefferson said. "After that, I went over there, and they offered. Since it was my first offer, I was really shocked and didn't even know what to say."

When Jefferson finally came back down to Earth, he discussed how he could fit into SMU's 3-4 defensive scheme. At Athens, the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder has played outside linebacker, safety and even wide receiver.

But Jefferson will line up on the defensive side of the ball at the next level. He just doesn't know exactly where yet.

"Coach Mason and Coach Hill told me they don't know where they're going to put me yet, but they like my speed and athleticism," Jefferson said. "I'm really comfortable playing safety or outside linebacker since I've played both here.

"I think I would like playing for SMU. Coach Mason and Coach Hill pretty much kept it real with me. They were really business-like and up front, and I really liked that about them."

Colorado State, TCU, Texas Tech, Tulsa and UTEP have all shown interest in Jefferson, but SMU currently sits at the top of his list.

"I was big on TCU because they liked me early on. But at the same time, I had my eye on SMU," he said. "TCU hadn't contacted me, and SMU stayed on my radar. Then I fell in love with SMU so they are definitely my favorite right now."

Jefferson says he plans on visiting SMU during the summer as he continues to work on being more physical and getting stronger in preparation for his senior season.
